The Conversation (1974)

The Conversation (1974)

Quite often, movies use a particular tune as a recurring theme, varying the tempo based on the emotion on display, like ‘Lara’s theme’ in Dr. Zhivago for instance. ‘The Conversation’ uses a recorded conversation between a cheating wife and her lover as a recurring theme, as it plays on the mind of a suspicious introverted surveillance expert, who tries his best to not get involved with the content of his recording.

Harry Caul is a surveillance expert, a private operator who spies on people and records their conversations for his clients. His motto has always been to keep distance from the objective of his client, focusing instead on doing his job right. When a competitor brings out a ghost from Harry’s past, where his recordings led to the death of a family, Harry begins to feel responsible for the consequence of his current recording, between a cheating wife and her lover and particular sentence, ‘He’d kill us if he had a chance’. Faced with inner turmoil between his natural instinct to walk away and a sense of guilt, Harry must decide what to do.

Francis Ford Coppola’s screenplay and direction of ‘The Conversation’ are mind blowing. The first 10 minutes are spent on the conversation between the woman and man in a square, with lots of people around them. That conversation is played and re-played, serving as a background to Harry’s thought process, showcasing outstanding sound direction.

The viewer is taken into the deep recesses of Caul’s mixed up mind that suppresses guilt and suspicion. Cual’s loneliness and claustrophobic existence are depicted superbly through his interactions with his occasional girlfriend, to whom he cannot even express his love, his awkward interaction with people and his ultimate confrontation with himself. The film was nominated for directing, writing and sound at the Oscars.

This has to be one of Gene Hackman’s finest roles. As his world begins caving in on him, you can sense his increasing discomfort. Hackman’s character doesn’t say much but conveys everything through body language. A fine example of method acting. A young Harrison Ford does a good job of playing the client’s assistant, who keeps Caul guessing on his fate.

‘The Conversation’ is a great suspense film, high on content and technique.

Hitchcock Series: Rebecca (1940)

Hitchcock Series: Rebecca (1940)

‘Last night I dreamt I went to Manderlay again’. These first lines serve as the backdrop to the opening shot with a meandering camera making its way in the night through a large estate lying waste, only to reveal the dilapidated remains of what was once a stately residence. In the first 30 seconds, the stage is set for a riveting mystery, the answer to which the master shall reveal when he thinks you are ready. Alfred Hitchcock’s film adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s 1939 novel explores how arduous it is to deal with a memory.

The film revolves around a rich businessman, Maxim de Winter, a widower who is struggling to get over the death of his first wife, Rebecca who has drowned in a boat accident. In Monte Carlo, he comes across a much younger woman, whom he falls in love with, marries and brings back to his Manderlay estate, to become the new Mrs. de Winter.

His new wife discovers that the large mansion and estate bear the unmistakable mark of Rebecca, her insignia on every piece of cloth, her name on the lips of the staff and the part of the house that she occupied, sealed off. The housekeeper Mrs. Danvers is unwilling to accept that another woman is taking Rebecca’s place. She finds Maxim increasingly cagey about Rebecca and soon discovers that there is more to her supposed accidental death than meets the eye. How she deals with the overbearing memory of Rebecca as well as the mystery surrounding her death is what the plot tries to unravel.

The first thing you notice about ‘Rebecca’ is the fantastic interplay of light and shadow. The first shot through the run down estate, sees the lighting change as the narrator describes the surroundings and the eeriness of the context becomes evident right away. Hitchcock’s direction sees him using the elements of the mansion to create an almost ghostly atmosphere permeated by Rebecca’s indelible imprint. It is a unique situation where a memory of a dead person is almost alike in impact to her ghost.

Sir Laurence Olivier as Maxim looks every bit the aloof and reclusive aristocrat. But he seems rather awkward in his portrayal of Maxim. Stiff and machinelike almost. Whether it is his manner or the demands of the character, his portrayal of the conflict within Maxim is below par as compared to what you would expect from an actor of his caliber. Joan Fontaine as the second Mrs. de Winter does a reasonable job of portraying a woman caught in a different league. The acting honors go to the menacing and vengeful Mrs. Danvers played by Judith Anderson. One outstanding scene where she tries to use the vulnerability of the second wife to drive her to suicide is superbly executed. Her portrayal set the template, it seems for roles such as Nurse Ratched in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’.

Watch ‘Rebecca’ for it is a well executed suspense thriller that will keep you guessing right up to the very end. Hitchcock in his elements.

Algiers (1938)

Algiers (1938)

Gaby (Hedy Lamarr) arrives in Algiers engaged to a fat, vulgar borderline-loathsome older man who clearly regards her as a trophy bought and paid for. Why she needed this creep isn't clear. What is clear is her falling in love with the jewel thief Pepe Le Moko (Charles Boyer) who abandons the devoted and clinging Ines (Sigrid Gurie) for this right-off-the-boat hothouse beauty. A Parisian police official (Walter Kingsford) is in Algiers determined to collar Pepe. His forays into the casbah meet with no success and quiet derision from both the locals and some of the French police who understand that the casbah is honeycombed with escape routes and populated with folks eager to thwart the gendarmerie.

The Limits of Control (2009)

The Limits of Control (2009)

(Guest Review by Amitava Ghosh)

"Reality is Arbitrary".

Jim Jarmusch's latest movie builds on the melancholic loneliness that pervades his earlier cult movies like Down By Law and yet bathes in a Chesterton-esque aura of magical reality. The usual modes, methods and means, that a serious student of film-making traditionally possesses, are deliberately under-utilised here, allowing the creator in Jarmusch to attempt opening up communications at another plane. The outcome certainly challenges the established vocabularies of the cinematic medium.

"Universe has no center or edges."

The Lone Man (When, if ever, did one last watch a movie where the chief protagonist himself had no name?) is on a secret assignment. At each step of the 'puzzle' he would be asked in Spanish - "You don't know Spanish, right?" (Imagine being asked repeatedly whether you know a language in that language itself. How would you respond?) and given a matchbox that contains a chit of paper cryptically stating his next destination. The Lone Man dutifully chews up the chit every time, literally. The characters, that come to pass him information on how and where he can find his assassination target, talk to him about their views on music, cinema, sex and creation.

All the people, who act as messaging conduits, seem to have some esoteric views and if one cares to follow the conversations more minutely, the philosophies pouted by these momentary acquaintances leave a somewhat lasting impression. Do these very views echo in Jarmusch's subliminal self, or is he merely playing with the critics looking for deeper meanings, is something one would always wonder. Again, all these conversations are deliberately underplayed through heightened stylisation of the almost silent protagonist.

Isaac De Bankolé is passivity himself. A painting-loving, Tai-ichi practicing, smart professional with distrust for guns and distaste for gadgets, the character is misfit in most films of the mainstream suspense genre. But again Jim Jarmusch was never ‘Mainstream Hollywood’.
While reviewers have not missed Paz De La Huerta's cameo, entirely in the buff, Tilda Swinton, Youki Kudoh and John Hurt also do their bit of under-acting with a melodramatic glamour dolloped on them.

However, this is truly a Director's film. At the end of the assassination mission, when The Lone Man discards his bland suits in favour of a gay dress, the story ends suddenly with the sirens of authority swooping in on their potential target. Who says a movie has to have a definite and unambiguous ending? A creation that had started with quotations from Arthur Rimbaud's poetry ends with the rather loud slogan "No Limits No Control", losing a bit of the subtlety that has been this poetic narrative's main mode of communication all along. Is it because that Jarmusch himself is unsure whether the message has already been delivered by then?
